How to Wash and Care for Natural Cotton Products
Share
Natural cotton products require different care than synthetic materials. To help you get the best life out of your items, we’ve created an easy care guide organized by product type.
1. Cotton Batting (Rolls & Sheets)
Our cotton batting is made from 100% all-natural or GOTS-certified organic cotton and is not designed to be machine washed.
Care Instructions:
- Do not machine wash or machine dry
- Spot clean gently with mild soap and cool water
- Allow to air dry completely
- To refresh, place in indirect sunlight or a well-ventilated area
-
Avoid soaking—the fibers can clump or lose loft
If your batting is quilted:
- Batting can be hand washed and line dried only if it has been quilted in a pattern 1.5" × 1.5" or smaller
- Gently press water through the quilted item—avoid wringing or twisting
- Lay flat or hang to dry in indirect sunlight
2. Cotton Stuffing / Loose Fill
Loose cotton fill is delicate and should never be submerged or machine washed.
Care Instructions:
- Spot clean outer fabric only
- Do not wash the fill itself
- Air out periodically to restore loft
- If odor control is needed, place in sun for a short time (1–2 hours)
-
Replace fill if it becomes overly compacted over time
3. Cotton Pillow Inserts
Most cotton pillow inserts are not machine washable, but the outer cover may be removable depending on your product type.
Care Instructions:
- Spot clean insert only
- Do not machine wash or dry
- If insert has a zipper, remove fill before washing the cover
- Machine wash covers in cold or warm water, gentle cycle
-
Air dry; avoid high heat
Pro Tip: Fluff and rotate your cotton pillow regularly to maintain shape.
4. Cotton Futons & Cushion Inserts
These products use compressed layers of cotton and should not go in a washing machine.
Care Instructions:
- Spot clean surface gently
- Air out regularly to reduce moisture and restore freshness
- Place outdoors occasionally to regain loft
- Avoid soaking—the layers can distort or bunch
-
Keep dry; cotton absorbs moisture easily
For deeper cleaning: Use a handheld garment steamer lightly over the surface to refresh.
5. Muslin Encasements & Cotton Covers
These are the parts that can be safely washed.
Care Instructions:
- Remove all cotton fill before washing
- Machine wash in cold or warm water
- Use a gentle or fragrance-free detergent
- Tumble dry low or air dry
-
Avoid bleach or hot water (can cause 3–5% shrinkage)
These covers are durable and made for repeated washing.
